Water & Power - City of Loveland
LWP Home MenuDrone Operations
The Loveland Water and Power (LWP) Drone Operations team is housed within our Utility Application Services (UAS) division. This division serves all four utilities (electric, water, wastewater, broadband) by managing critical technology tools used in everyday operations. This team recognized the value drone inspections could bring to the utility and began planning training and funding for drone operations as early as 2019.
In the summer of 2024, LWP plans on expanding their current drone operations to include inspections of utility-owned power lines, which may bring them in closer contact with customer interests. We know that new technology may raise new questions. Please use this page to find important information about our drone operations. Contact information is listed at the bottom of the page for additional questions or feedback.
Boundaries in Drone Usage:
We understand that the sight of drones may raise concerns about privacy and security. We want to assure our customers that we value their privacy. Our drone operations are strictly regulated and adhere to the highest privacy protection standards. Drones are used exclusively for inspecting and surveying our own assets and facilities for the purpose of collecting critical information to prevent service interruptions, reduce maintenance costs and improve customer reliability.
While we prioritize operating in utility easements and avoiding private property altogether, occasional brief overflights may be necessary for safety reasons, to navigate around hazards or to get a crucial inspection angle. Even in those instances, the focus remains on gathering data on utility-owned equipment only, our drones are NOT involved in law or code enforcement or used for surveillance of private property or individuals.
Examples of Drone Missions:
- Utility line & equipment inspections
- Water tank/tower inspections
- Solar field inspections
- City building roof inspections for energy efficiency
- Surveys and 3D modeling for utility construction projects
- Shore erosion and algae growth monitoring at Green Ridge Glade Reservoir

Drone Operations Near Customers- What To Do if You See a Drone
Many inspections of utility-owned facilities and infrastructure will not overlap with private property and pilots will seek to avoid private areas whenever possible. However, when our drone team is operating in an area that has the potential to cross over private property, customers may be more likely to recognize that activity is happening near them.
If you see a drone operating near your home or business and would like to confirm that this is part of the utility drone operations, please look for signs placed nearby drone operation zones or call 970-962-3000 and a LWP representative should be able to confirm active operational zones that day.
Drone operation schedules are highly subject to change based on outdoor conditions, making advance notice difficult.
