Loveland Water and Power (LWP) meter readers manually read over 35,400 electric meters and 26,100 water meters on a monthly basis, in any weather. This will begin to change in 2024, when we start a city-wide deployment of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) allowing us to read meters remotely moving forward.

Starting in May 2023 we’ll be utilizing contractors from SiteWise to assist with meter reading and utility shut off services, in preparation for our AMI deployment. This will help ensure that all electric and water meters are thoroughly read for accuracy during the deployment.

This page contains all information you need about meter reading, including:

How to identify LWP meter readers and SiteWise contractors

LWP and SiteWise meter readers carry a City of Loveland photo ID card and wear shirts or jackets bearing the City of Loveland logo. They also drive vehicles marked with the City of Loveland or SiteWise logo; SiteWise vehicles will have signage indicating authorized contractor for the City of Loveland. If you have any doubts about someone claiming to be a city or contracted meter reader, call us at 970-962-3390 for verification!

Transition to contracted meter reading staff

The City of Loveland has grown considerably in population over the last 20-30 years. Every new building, whether it’s a home or a business, requires a meter to measure electric and/or water consumption for each customer.

Currently the majority of these meters must be read manually every month by City staff; this is imperative to providing our customers with accurate utility bills. Our meter reading team hasn’t grown in proportion to our community’s population growth; in order to provide adequate service to our customers and community while ensuring accurate customer bills, we’ve decided to supplement our existing meter reading staff with licensed contractors trained in the same high standards we require of our direct staff beginning as early as May 2023. All contracted meter readers will have City of Loveland credentials and will functionally operate as City employees.

How to ensure your meter is accessible to meter readers

As your utility, we need safe and unrestricted access to your meters when a meter reading or service is required. Please ensure that landscaping is trimmed around your meters, providing at least four feet of clearance at all times.

If your meters are located inside a fenced yard

Many of the electric meters in the older parts of town are located on the back or side of the single-family homes - which requires the meter reader to enter the yard to obtain the reading. If your electric meter is located in a fenced yard, we need your help to keep our meter readers safe while they complete their meter routes; locked gates and dogs in the yard are two of our most common access problems.

Our meter readers will sometimes knock on the front door to ask for help if the dogs appear threatening or if the gate is locked. Utility customers who aren’t home may receive a door hanger asking them to contact the meter reader’s office to discuss options available regarding their meter reading, including:

  1. Be added our customer call list, allowing you to receive a phone call one working day prior to your next meter reading, notifying you that your gate (and any other gates or doorways) will need to be unlocked and pets kept away.
